Following the recent surge in criticism towards Apple’s business model, Mark and Brian will explore the issue of ‘openness’ in technology using the iPhone and Windows Mobile phone ecosystems as examples.

We like to talk about industry news a lot on the SMACKDOWN. We speculate based on news/blogs from analysts and industry gurus and our own experience with tech. One of the problems with speculating about the future of tech is that unless you are one of the executives at the corporate table, it’s all just guess work. Another problem is that competition and human behavior are unpredictable.
That’s immediately what came to mind the other night when I was watching the SciFi channel. Following the new HP add featuring Lauren from the “Laptop Hunters” and yet another “images on the screen are not what happens in real life” iPhone add, I saw for the first time the new U2 Blackberry ad. In case you haven’t heard, U2 has ended their ‘partnership’ with Apple and have Blackberry sponsoring their upcoming tour. The add ends with prominent, white, sans serif font reading, “Blackberry Loves U2.”
RIM already has the largest market share for cell phones, right? Are marketing shifts like this game changers?
Only time and the buying power of the World’s population can tell.

Hi all, due to some scheduling conflicts tonight’s show is going to be postponed until this weekend. It always seems like the end of August is really hard for most people, including myself.
Once I am able to purchase a new phone interface (which I hope to be soon) I will turn situations like this into a live call in show with just me and we can still have some fun. Not that I want to turn into Leo Laporte or anything

Tonight we take a break from smacking around and catch up on some mail and talk about some news around the net. It’s a short one but a good one.
Well, if you have been following us on twitter, (and really if you’re not, give it a try. Click on the twitter link above) you have heard the announcement that we are going to try the “listen to the show as it happens live” via talk shoe next week.
This will be episode 52 and INVITE ONLY. We’ll do it this way just to work out the kinks of the system. Plus, I really want to see how many people are interested in hearing the show live as we do it.
There really will be a few perks to listening to the show live:
1) There is a lot of funny stuff that happens that gets edited out.
2) Beau and David tend to say somecool stuff before I hit record.
3) It tends to be…um…shall we say uncensored. 
4) IF THIS WORKS WE WILL TURN IT INTO A LIVE TALK SHOW WHERE YOU CAN TALK BACK TO US.
